Opal Card cap and Gold Opal Card freeze

In March 2019, the NSW Government announced Opal Card caps and programs to address the cost of living for customers and make transport accessible for those on lower incomes.

Initiatives include:

  • A reduction of the weekly Opal Card cap to $50 a week. It is expected 55,000 commuters will save up to $686 a year.
  • A freeze on fares for holders of Gold Opal Cards at $2.50 a day for the next four years.
  • The Regional Transport Seniors Card for aged pensioners in regional areas which provides each card holder with $250 towards fuel, taxis or train tickets each year over the next two years.
