Future Transport outlines Transport for NSW’s vision and sets the direction for the future of mobility in NSW. It is our vision to deliver safe, healthy, sustainable, accessible and integrated passenger and freight journeys.
The Future Transport Strategy includes ground-breaking ideas to bring the NSW Government’s Six Cities vision to life, connect regional communities, encourage thriving local neighbourhoods and strengthen NSW’s economy.
Planning for the future ensures that we can maintain and improve the liveability of our cities, towns and neighbourhoods as the population of NSW grows. It allows us to allocate funding wisely to develop a transport system which meets our customers’ needs.
Since Transport for NSW released the first Future Transport 2056 strategy in 2018, the world has been shaped by significant social and economic change brought about by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, bushfires, floods, and drought. Our communities’ needs have changed.
This updated Strategy considers the impact of these changes and addresses trends such as population growth, energy transition, the digital economy, climate change and evolving technology.
The Future Transport Strategy is part of a broader suite of Government strategies and plans guiding integrated land use and infrastructure planning across NSW.
Aligning transport and land use planning ensures our regional and metropolitan areas are integrated, connected, and resilient. Our transport plans need to evolve over time to reflect and respond to changing land use visions. We will continue to work with land-use and infrastructure agencies to ensure integrated planning achieves the best outcomes for the people of NSW.
We will develop Future Transport Plans that outline the future services and infrastructure needs as the visions for our cities, regions and towns evolve. We will release new Future Transport Plans in 2023 and 2024 as the Greater Cities Commission updates its Region and City Plans.
Transport welcomes collaboration with government, industry partners, customers, and communities to deliver our shared goals.
For Government and Councils, the Future Transport Strategy provides a framework for including transport in planning and program delivery.
Industry partners, such as business and transport operators, can use the strategy to identify opportunities for partnerships, investment, and operational capability.
Customers and communities will see Transport for NSW's commitments to improving customer journeys in regional and metropolitan areas, improving equity and access, and achieving net zero emissions.
